🏺 Capula: The Land of the Clay Catrina

Although Capula is not located on the shore of Lake Pátzcuaro (it is situated in the municipality of Morelia), it is an essential destination that complements the Day of the Dead celebration due to its iconic art and historical heritage.

  • Location and Route: Capula is located approximately 49 km (30 miles) from Pátzcuaro by road. The drive takes about 1 hour, making it a perfect day trip from your base in Pátzcuaro.
  • Cradle of the Catrina: Capula is globally known as the Land of the Clay Catrina, the most iconic artistic figure of death in Mexico.
  • National Catrina Fair: During the Day of the Dead season (mid-October to early November), Capula hosts the National Catrina Fair, an open-air gallery where hundreds of artisans exhibit and sell these figures.
  • Quiroga’s Legacy: Its pottery tradition dates back to the 16th century, connecting it to the region’s history.
